Boutique Hotels are the new accommodation concept to hit the Maltese islands. Unlike their chain competitors, boutique hotels provide a unique and intimate atmosphere to their visitors. Travellers or even residents wanting something quieter than Malta, might want to look at boutique hotels in Gozo.
Sometimes, a change of scenery is more important than one thinks. Visitors looking for a quick weekend getaway, away from the fast-paced atmosphere of Malta, yet not wanting to travel too far, might want to consider spending some time on the sister island of Gozo which lies a few kilometres away from the main island. Gozo provides the ideal ‘staycation’ destination – providing visitors with a combination of the traditional and the luxurious, a relaxing atmosphere, fantastic food and views.
For that ‘home away from home’ feel, visitors have the opportunity to stay in one of the myriad of boutique hotels which offer an insight into the quiet Maltese way of life. Most of these boutique hotels were previously old houses or palazzos, renovated and turned into boutique hotels so in spite of their modern renovations, their old fashioned charm still oozes through the cracks.

The classic contemporary style of the rooms is a key feature, with more attention being spared to the details. The rooms are of the highest standard and although the rooms might differ from one another, they all contain everything one requires; including a 42 inch TV, AC/Heating, a minibar, tea/coffee making facilities, international wall sockets and high speed Wi-Fi. Amenities and toiletries are also available in every bathroom.
The different types of rooms available include Standard Rooms, Garden View Rooms with a Balcony overlooking Villa Rundle Gardens (a kitchenette is also available for stays over 4 weeks), Jacuzzi Terrace Rooms which have a personal terrace with sunbeds, pool towels and a personal Jacuzzi hot tub overlooking the village’s skyline, Junior Suites (similar to Jacuzzi Terrace Rooms with slight differences) and finally the Presidential Suite which offers a heated pool with Jacuzzi in a private terrace with views of the Citadel and Villa Rundle Gardens, a stand-alone bath in front of the fireplace in the bedroom and a walk in wardrobe.
3. ThirtySeven
Address: 37, Munxar Road, Munxar, Gozo.
Previously a 400 year old farm house, this converted and renovated boutique hotel in Gozo, possesses bespoke sophistication and creativity like no other.
And you wouldn’t expect anything less from its owners Patti and Giuseppe Piazzi, who worked in the fashion industry previous to them relocating to Gozo and opening ThirtySeven.
Visitors have the opportunity to choose to stay in one of the ten distinctly themed guest rooms, all very different yet unified by their chic décor.
The Shanghai Junior Suite is inspired by oriental décor whilst also offering a sense of calmness which one can continue to experience by going out to the roof terrace. If we take a look at another room, The Loft, we find that it has a New York style of furnishing, with a glass wardrobe separating the room and pop art and photography decorating the room. Another room which caught my eye, a converted mill room bearing the name of Ghawdex (Gozo), portrays a more local style of furnishing, with photos of beautiful Gozitan views displayed on the limestone walls.
In all suites, one finds Wi-Fi, AC, an iPod docking station and also a hairdryer. Surrounded by beautiful gardens and two pools, it’s no wonder that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie chose to stay here during the filming of ‘By the Sea’.
